Sun Microsystems attempted to compete with Google Code and GitHub, through Kenai Project, a hosting site for open source project from Sun, which is launched in beta version. According to Nick Sieger, project engineer of Kenai, the main objective of this project is not to compete with the existing hosting sites.

Developers can become the host of their project without additional cost at the site, plus the ease of Subversion and Mercurial control system. It also provides traffic tracking service, forums and other features. Project Kenai is an awareness of Sun, as the largest open-source company in the world.

Kenai server is built with the framework of Ruby on Rails development which has good reputation to generate good profile such as Twitter. And then it is combined with the open-source components and technology of Sun. Kenai site can be a good base to build a web application.
