Corey Haim’s Death and Prescription Drug Abuse

On Friday, March 12, 2010, the California Attorney General, Jerry Brown announced that the death of Corey Haim, an actor, was related to massive prescription drug use. The actor was reported as using OxyContin as a painkiller to help him relieving his pain. This news certainly once again turns people attention because it is not the first prescription drug abuse case that happens to celebrity or popular people in Virginia. In fact, this news make people realize that prescription drug abuse is as dangerous as drugs abuse.

Today in Virginia, there are many prescription drug abuse cases that involve not only celebrity or popular people but also health care givers. It is not exaggerating if we say that the number of prescription drug abuse is increasing significantly nowadays. This is because in some situations, people can easily get prescription drugs. Originally, people get the drugs based on doctor’s prescription in which the dose and administration has been administered based on patients’ personal condition. That is why one prescription is only valid for the name on the prescription. However, as one of Virginia happenings, people can always find ways that enable them to buy the prescription drugs without prescription. There are some mechanisms that give people opportunities to get the prescription drugs illegally.

Realizing the above fact, authorities in Virginia today should manage to strictly apply their law so that the same case can be prevented. There should be a good cooperation between the society, government, and health practitioner so that prescription drug abuse can be eliminated or at least prevented.
