bleaching wood pulp releases carcinogens into nature's water systems? really? i never knew that! thanks, that's something i'll have to keep on my mind.

and what I was trying to say is that saving a sheet of paper isn't really saving a tree. yeah, paper comes form trees, but you get more than one sheet per log. And, as I mentioned, there are more damaging industries than logging. I was just trying to point a few things out and get people to think differently; sorry if it came out wrong.

but I recently heard that because selective logging targets the strongest, biggest trees, in certain conditions as many as 50 trees can be killed- and that timber isn't collected but naturally degraded and returned to the earth over time. that sounds bad

Yeah... your post seems to say something more along the lines of "don't really worry about it, the effect of logging for paper isn't really that bad." You said "saving paper doesn’t necessarily save trees." and "Actual damage from legal logging is actually less you think." Bleaching wood pulp for paper puts these ridiculous carcinogens into water systems, which make their way up the food chain, stored in the fatty tissues of animals, until it's highly concentrated in fish like salmon, tuna, and dolphin, then we eat them.

@anon
I never said logging has a small environmental impact, in fact, I saw trying to say the opposite. Were you being sarcastic? I didn't get it.

And isn't a wood pulp the result of logging? Bleached for paper, cut for lumber, whatever- it still all comes from the same thing: trees.

You're right though- paper is in huge demand and a large percentage of logs cut go into making it. That's why it's so important to RECYCLE. Over 50% of the stuff in landfills are paper products. Just imagine what would happen if we recycled that instead of threw it out.

You should look into the damage to the environment caused during the bleaching of wood pulp for paper, maybe you'll think twice about how little environmental impact logging has on the earth.
