Engadget.com revealed on the 31st that they have been invited to an “Apple ‘product presentation for Mac’ at Apple Town Hall in Cupertino next week. The event gets started on the morning of Tuesday, August 7th, and while we weren’t promised an appearance by El Jobso, Apple was, shockingly enough, very open and clear about the fact that this is going to be a press gathering for Mac products (and Mac products only)”.

Looks like Apple will be updating the Mac before the iPod. So I was wrong about the order, but I was right saying that August 7th will be all about the Mac. Will everything else I said about the brushed aluminum iMacs be true also?

This morning the US/Canada Apple store was down (apple.com/store). It came right back up with no differences. Everything seems yo be the same. Perhaps it was just some normal maintenance, or maybe….

Notice that there is a small gap in between the two rows of products in the center of the page.

Could this be a minor mistake as they altered the code to allow a third row of products? The new updates I predicted in my last post?

07302007-1244pm-2.png07302007-1244pm.pngWhen Apple moved to the new version of their site at the announcement of the iPhone, all pages were updated for the new style- except the store. It still has plain gray boxes while other pages, such as the “Mac” page to the right, have a nice gradient and larger size.

Could all these things be signs that Apple is preparing to update the store? Maybe, say, for an August 7th product transition?

On the 25th, Apple mentioned “product transition” in a conference call. The main two theories are that this means: A) 6th-gen iPods B) New iMacs.

Almost unanimously, the analysts are predicting a product shakeup, specifically in the iPod family. Ars says multitouch is coming, Forbes suggests that Apple tipped its hand to upcoming product changes, and Apple Insider has Ben Reitzes, who was the first analyst to question the low guidance, suggesting that an iMac redesign or “ultra-portable” may be in the works.
But the majority of analysts say it’s the iPod that Apple will focus on. The iPod has been waiting in the wings, watching the iPhone and OS X get all kinds of pretty updates, and call it what you want– the halo effect or trickle down– the iPod is ready for a refresh. ThinkSecret comes right out and says it: we’ll see a 6G iPod as early as the first half of August.

But personally, I think this is going to be much, much more. Continue reading »

fireworks.pngI was reading The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW.com) and I came across this. They mentioned it because of Independence day, but even though the 4th has passed it’s still a cool screensaver, and it’s free.

It does a great job of rendering not only the fireworks, but also the smoke, moon, stars, clouds, ground (with the occasional mountain in the background) and wind, all fully customizable in it’s options menu. Throughout the whole thing, it pans and zooms through the explosions. It can even do the fireworks sounds, although I’m not sure why anybody would want sounds in their screensaver so I personally turned that off.

This is replacing “Fenêtres Volantes” as my permanent screensaver.

But, unfortunately, it’s mac only.

Apparently the iPhone isn’t as fragile as everyone thought. PC World, among other things, dropped it onto concrete a few times and rubbed the screen with a key, but the tempered glass screen didn’t show “any visible scratches”. The only signs of damage were some scuffs on the shiny chrome sides. It seems that it actually was a good idea for Apple to use a glass screen instead of a plastic one. Goos job, Apple. You can see PC World’s video here and read their article here.

(and thanks to Engadget.com for their excellent iPhone coverage that pointed out this article and provided the picture.)

The iPhone is coming in about 5 minutes from when I’m writing this, and Gizmodo.com is doing a live unboxing at 6:15. And Engadget.com has live-updated, multi store in this post.

omg I can’t wait, not that I’m crazy enough topay that much for one, but it looks cool (shiney = good, shiney + Apple Logo = ****ing awesome). And I heard that the firts things the Apples stores will do when they get the shipments is a firmware update to add some last minute functionality like picture messaging. Cool. Kind of like what the Wii and PS3 did; they begged for an update the moment you got them out of the box and onto the internet.

Hey! I just updated the Engadget page and it says they’re letting the first guy buy one in an AT&T store in Montague, St. Brooklyn!

So the Apple iPhone is coming at 6pm this Saturday (June 29), and most people are pretty excited. Everywhere you look, iPhone, iPhone, iPhone; it’s inescapable.

Gizmodo.com was nice enough to make a list of the features the iPhone will NOT have.

  • Songs as Ringtones
  • Games
  • Any flash support
  • Instant Messaging
  • Picture messages (MMS)
  • Video recording
  • Voice recognition or voice dialing
  • Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming (A2DP)
  • One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones)

Interesting. I’m just disappointed that the iPhone is AT&T only. I have Verizon, which is actually better service, but never has any of the really cool phones. But if it makes a call, I guess that’s all that counts, right? An iPhone would be nice, though. Seriously, though, didn’t Jobs promise when he first revealed the iPhone that it would have Adobe Flash and Java support? Whatever happened to that? and if it has a camera and the AT&T plan includes “visual voicemail” (whatever the heck that is), why can’t it record videos?

“We’ve all seen the PC vs Mac ads by Apple, there are plenty of them. But now it’s time for the PC to counterattack, with the help of director Laurie McGuinness, who created four small hilarious clips, with the same character personalities (the PC being older, “boring”, and the Mac being younger and cooler), but this time the Mac doesn’t get the spotlight. What I liked about the clips is that they’re not made in order to harm the Mac, and they don’t deny the qualities portraied in the Mac ads, but they observe the PC’s own qualities, without denying the Mac’s.” Andrei Maguleanu

These ads are very funny, be sure to watch them here.
